Stilpnomelane is a phyllosilicate mineral. It has the formula K(Fe 2+,Mg,Fe 3+) 8 (Si,Al) 12 (O,OH) 27 ·n(H 2 O). Stilpnomelane occurs associated with banded iron formations. It is a metamorphic mineral associated with the blueschist and greenschist facies.

Stilpnomelane definition is - a black or greenish black mineral K(Fe,Al)10Si12O30(O,OH)12 (?) occurring in foliated plates, fibrous forms, and velvety bronze-colored incrustations and consisting of a hydrous iron aluminum silicate with a little potassium (specific gravity 2.77—2.96).
— Stilpnomelane with quartz, chlorite and hematite occurs in metagreywackes northwest of Florence in T.40N. R.17E. (Dutton, 1971). — Stilpnomelane is a component of the iron formation found in and near the Dunkel test shaft and adit in sec. 25 T.40N. R.17E. It is associated with quartz and magnetite. (Dutton, 1971).

Stilpnomelane occurs associated with banded iron formations. It is a metamorphic mineral associated with the blueschist and greenschist facies. Optical Properties • Form: Flaky, radiating and brush-like acicular crystals. • Color: Yellowish, greenish and brownish with strong pleochroism.
Stilpnomelane and biotite: K-bearing phases other than white mica and K-feldspar were only observed in FO0016. Referring to this temperature, metamorphic pressures could have been elevated due to the assemblage phengite + stilpnomelane.
Stilpnomelane is a dark brown to black layer-silicate mineral found in some low-grade regionally metamorphosed terranes. Although particularly well developed in iron formations, stilpnomelane may also occur in pelitic, quartzofeldspathic and mafic rocks. The megascopic appearance and optical prop-erties of stilpnomelane mimic closely those of ...
