Hercynite is a spinel mineral with the formula FeAl 2 O 4.. It occurs in high-grade metamorphosed iron rich argillaceous sediments as well as in mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks.Due to its hardness it also is found in placers.. It was first described in 1847 and its name originates from the Latin name for the Harz, Silva Hercynia, where the species was first found.

Hercynite, the mineral iron aluminum oxide, a member of the spinel (q.v.)
A mixed cobalt ferrite-hercynite system (CoFe 2 O 4 /FeAl 2 O 4) has been proposed by the University of Colorado (United States) as a potential redox cycle . The hercynite is produced due to the reaction between CoFe 2 O 4 and its support material, Al 2 O 3. The overall reactions for H 2 O splitting can be summarized as:

Till date hercynite is rarely available in nature and electro-fusion is the main process of manufacturing hercynite in the industry. However, the main drawbacks of electrofusion process are time and energy consumption. This paper describes the synthesis of hercynite by plasma fusion, which is a new, faster and economic process, and also its ...
